Your most precious cargo requires specialist care, whether it be your beloved pup or your prize bull. Definitely do your homework! Different countries have different regulations and it is imperative that these pet health regulations are strictly adhered to. Luckily rabies is extremely rare in South Africa and travelling with your pet shouldn’t be a problem.
Different airlines also have different rules regarding pet travel; a few even allow your furry friend to travel with you in the cabin, but this is quite rare. Usually pets are shipped in special crates and it is advised that you acclimatize your pet by using the crate at home and taking short trips. Remember, your pet may spend many hours in this crate whilst travelling and you want it to be as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
Your pet’s “passport” will consist of all the relevant paperwork you require to travel with your pet. Does your pet have an ISO microchip? Do you have proof of rabies vaccination? Speak to your vet about your travel plans.
Airlines have special ventilated and temperature-controlled holds for animals and your pet will probably travel more comfortably than you in the quieter, darkened environment.
Book your pet travel far in advance as airlines have limited space for animals. It is also advised that you travel on a weekday when all staff are present to assist you.
When selecting a container for your pet, make sure that it can turn around, lie down naturally and sit upright comfortably. Your selected pet transporter will be able to give you the correct guidelines.
